Brisbane City Council Rates Sugar Beater Stevia 5 Star!

As part of our licensing requirements Brisbane City Council recently inspected our packaging process. This is standard for all companies who are classed as being manufacturers; because we transfer the Stevia from wholesale bags to resale bags we are classed as being manufacturers.

The representative from the Brisbane City Council observed where we pack, how we prepare, how we do it, and what we do afterwards. He examined how we received and stored our Stevia; no stone was left unturned in this rigorous vetting process.

The outcome we are pleased to announce is that Sugar Beater Stevia has achieved the highest rating possible, a full 5 stars!

As soon as possible we will display a copy of our certificate on our site.

How can I compare prices for Stevia?

A Guide to Comparing Prices

It can be very difficult to determine value when Stevia comes in so many different forms and quantities.

This short guide is provided to help you make sure you get the best value when you buy your Stevia.

Things to Consider When Buying Stevia

1. Is the Stevia mixed with something else?

Many companies use fillers and additives to reduce the bitter aftertaste and increase profits. While liquid Stevia and Stevia tablets are convenient, be sure to find out what has been added and to what extent the Stevia has been diluted. In comparison, our Stevia is pure and undiluted containing no fillers, additives, water, alcohol or any other chemicals.

2. How much do you need to use, spoonfuls, packets, grams?

The use of fillers and additives decreases sweetness, so you have to use more. In comparison, because our Stevia is pure you use a lot less.

3. What is the percentage of the Rebauside A content?

Some companies use a very low Rebaudioside A content which in turn means you need to use more of their product. In comparison, our Stevia contains 80% Rebaudioside A making it approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar, which means using far less, saving you money.

Concerning Rebaudioside A Content

Sometimes people ask us what percentage of Rebaudioside A our Stevia contains. It is only in recent years that the percentage of Rebaudioside A has become an issue. We believe the primary reason for this is the fact that some companies started using Rebaudioside A as a marketing ploy. In reality, above a certain percentage, it becomes a non-issue. Rebaudioside A is not the only element in Stevia that determines sweetness. Actually, Stevia is a combination of Stevioside, Rebaudioside, and Glycoside.

The only way to get a great tasting Stevia is to have all the Stevioside compounds present. The level of sweetness is not determined by the percentage of Rebaudioside A, but by the level of bitterness left in the Stevia extract. Companies are constantly experimenting with methods for extracting Stevia that will remove more of the bitter aftertaste: all white powder forms of Stevia are extracts by the way.

Stevia in a green powder form is the only natural form, because it is simply ground up Stevia.  However, its level of sweetness is extremely low and therefore not suitable as a replacement for sugar. Great tasting Stevia is based on the grade of the Stevia plant used, either an A or B grade plant, and how well the stems, roots, and leaf vein have been separated from the initial product. The real issue then is purity, not the percentage of Rebaudioside A. Our Stevia is produced from an A grade plant, and is as pure as any Stevia powder can be. The fact that it takes so little of our product to obtain the level of sweetness required by our customers is a good indicator of its quality.

Yes, our Stevia contains over 80% Rebaudioside A, but as I have stated, I think that is not important, because it does not affect the level of sweetness, and can be misleading as a guide to buying quality Stevia. A high Rebaudioside A percentage does not automatically equal high quality. However, we state the percentage of Rebaudioside A in our Stevia because many of the customers who contact us want to know the answer to that question.

A pure Stevia extract, one which has a zero bitter aftertaste, is the Holy Grail of our industry. As far as we are aware no one has achieved that yet. While there are companies who claim that their Stevia has no bitter aftertaste, for the time being we remain sceptical. While the level of the bitter aftertaste with pure Stevia varies widely, no producer has been able to eliminate it entirely, only reduce it. Mixing Stevia with additives helps, but then it is no longer pure Stevia. Then there is the issue mentioned already, that the sensitivity of people's sweetness receptors varies considerably. What may seem very bitter to one person is not to another. Keep in mind too, that our brains become used to the specific taste of sugar, and therefore there will be a short period of adjustment for most people before Stevia tastes exactly the same as sugar.

Because our Stevia is made from a Grade A plant, and is extracted using the most current process, it has very little bitter aftertaste, and none when we add it to our food and drink. We are therefore confident that anyone using our Stevia in place of sugar in hot drinks, cooking, on cereal, to make their own soft drinks etc., will find them sweet and delicious.

How do I know what's in the bag?

Recently we were asked a really good question,  "How do I know what's in the bag? Sure, the label says it is 100% Stevia, that it is certain weight, that it is imported from South Korea etc., but how can we be sure that what's written on the label is the truth?" The short answer is that we can never know for sure any product label is true; what we can do though is make a judgement regarding the probability that what we are paying for is what we are getting.

The risk factor.

Government officers do check that what's on the label is what's in the bag. Sure, a company might get away with it for a while, perhaps a long while, but eventually they will get caught. When they do, it's a major fine, loss of business, and damage to reputation. The question we have to ask ourselves would be "Is it worth it?": that's assuming of course that we don't have a strong moral base that forbids us cheating others, or for that matter a mum who would probably smack me up the side of the head if she ever caught me cheating others; fear can sometimes be a great motivator right? :). For me, it is never worth it, because I value highly my relationship with my customers, my reputation, sleeping well at night, and a fully functioning, pain free, head.

The time factor.

Long-term business is more profitable, in my view, than short-term business. Besides, I'm in business because I like what I do, not for the money. While the money makes it possible for me to do what I love to do, it is not the end goal. A happy, long-term relationship with my customers, being able to go on doing what I love, is more important to me than making money. Life is short! We have no idea really how much time we each have. I made the decision a long time ago to focus on enjoying life now, not planning to do it at some unknown point in the future.

If  I live only another day, or for another 50 years, what matters is that I maximized my potential each day for happiness, by making it possible to not work, but to do, because there is a big difference between working and doing. So, making sure that what is on the label, is what is in the bag, is very important to me. Which is why we source Sugar Beater Stevia from a reliable manufacturer who follows recognized international processing standards, such as HACCP. That way we can be confident that there are zero contaminants, and that the quality is exactly as stated on the label. We are secure in the knowledge that South Korea possesses some of the highest, most stringent, monitoring and control processes, both commercial and government.

As for Sugar Beater Stevia, we are government certified Food Safety Supervisors, and Food Handlers. We follow HACCP protocols in our packaging process. Masks, head covers, gloves, sterile measuring equipment, are always used to ensure that no contamination of our product can occur. It is our practice to always add one extra gram to every bag to make sure that you get the quantity stated on the label. We take great pride in providing a safe, healthy, low cost, high quality, product for you to enjoy.

Those are only two reasons for it being reasonable to believe that what we put on the label, is what we put in the Sugar Beater Stevia bag. There are plenty of other reasons, moral, spiritual, and practical, but this article is long enough already I think :).

Can I have more please?

We might have discovered a new use for Sugar Beater Stevia. Encouraging children to drink more water! The great thing about selling at the markets is the wonderful range of people you meet. Last Sunday was no exception. I was fortunate enough to be ‘adopted’ for the day by two delightful young people, Kayla and Nathan. They are the children of another stall holder.I’m not sure how old Kayla and Nathan are, I’d guess somewhere around 9 years of age, but then I’m terrible with ages, so don’t trust me on that estimate.

Their parents are doing an excellent job of raising them; they are polite, friendly, confident, and very eager to help. In fact, they spent most of the morning offering samples of Sugar Beater Stevia to anyone who visited my stand, and even took around my business card to give to each of the other stallholders at the market.

When Kayla and Nathan first appeared at my stand, just when I was setting up, they asked if they could try Sugar Beater Stevia. I put about a tip of a teaspoon in a cup of water, and they loved the taste so much, they kept asking for more throughout the rest of the day: with plenty of pleases and thank yous I’m glad to add. Kayla in particular was very impressed with Sugar Beater Stevia. Between 6am and 12 Noon, she drank about 13 cups of water: Nathan liked it too, but he only had about 3 because, as his mum later told me, he’d complained about being sick when he first got up (hope you feel better now mate).

What is wonderful about this is the fact that many kids normally don’t like drinking water: adults neither for that matter. Because Sugar Beater Stevia is 100% natural, with no additives, fillers, or chemicals, and is zero in calories and carbohydrates, drinking lots of it will do only good for the body, young and old.

We use water at the markets because it is the easiest way to give a sample. Sugar Beater Stevia can also be used to make natural fruit juice sweet, to make your own soft drinks using mineral water, to create healthy chocolate milk drinks, and to make healthy ice blocks. The end result is that children are happily consuming lots of healthy liquids, at a higher rate. Also, no sugar highs to deal with, less chance of tooth decay, and money saved for the family in a whole range of ways.

Kayla was so impressed she kindly agreed to give us a video testimonial.

Thank you Kayla!

Best of health always to you, your family, and your friends!
